6) The New, Old Fourth Ward

Saturday, July 9 (2:00pm – 7:00pm) (POSTPONED)

Tuesday, July 12 (5:00pm – 9:00pm) (STILL AVAILABLE)

Ponce City Market 2014

During the height of the civil rights movement, the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood of Atlanta, where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born, lived and is buried, was a bustling hub of middle-class black life. But as the interstate construction divided the neighborhood and families were relocated, this stretch of factories and homes east of downtown fell into decay. Now, the neighborhood is generating buzz again — as a cradle of culinary and artistic innovation and as a symbol of gentrification, with a more racially diverse population.

On this tour we will visit the rehabilitated urban neighborhood of Old Fourth Ward and the new Ponce City Market with its mixed-use concepts of “live, work and play”……. elevated to an art form. Ponce City Market breathes new life into the historic Sears, Roebuck & Co. distribution center in Atlanta. The classic structure has been transformed into a colossal mix of offices, apartments and retail stores totaling over one million square feet, with an all-star cast of culinary talent in the Central Food Hall.

After grabbing a bite to eat in the Food Hall (lunch not included in price), you may want to take a stroll on the Eastside Trail, the first finished section of the Atlanta BeltLine project.
